The Green Dragon, High Row, Exelby, Bedale, North Yorkshire, DL8 2HA.

Under 2 miles from the pell-mell of the A1M, on the edge of the Hambleton hills is the tranquil village of Exelby. As a rural settlement it probably pre-dates the A1's earlier version the Roman , Leeming Lane. Today its livelihood is gained primarily from agriculture in the fertile fields which surround it. As in all apparently quiet villages there is bustling local activity which continues un-noticed by the casual visitor and continues when they have departed. In Exelby a lot of this centres on the local pub, The Green Dragon, and what a wonderful example of a country pub it is.

In the lounge of The Green Dragon the beamed ceiling, with its collection of antique horse brasses reflects in the highly polished surfaces of the tables and chairs, softly lit by the subdued wall lighting. Surrounding the real fire the comfortable and cosy leather Chesterfield style chairs and sofas lend a further relaxing air. When the weather is on the cold side a roaring fire is always in evidence in the grate.
This is a wonderful place to just sit and savour a pint whilst updating yourself on the local news or the world further at large.
Light meals from the all day menu are available in this area along with a varied selection of sandwiches and snacks.

The Green Dragons welcoming lounge bar has a large selection of locally brewed Black Sheep beers kept in beautiful condition by Chris, the landlord, who oversees this area with the cheerful good humour of the archetypal publican. He is ably assisted by a team of young ladies who dispense drinks and banter, in equal measure, in an efficient and friendly manner, no long queues here.
Its a spacious bar with room to stand and chat although it can get quite lively on a weekend evening. This is when you really sense the atmosphere of the 'local', hard working people, relaxing and enjoying each others company, drinking good ales and savouring good food. A wonderful place to be.

The Green Dragon has a richly deserved reputation for the quality of  its food, customers come from far and wide to dine here. Only the absolute best of produce, sourced as locally as possible, is included in the dishes on offer from the vast and varied a la carte menu. The menu is available all day and all the dishes are cooked to order.
It is also possible to dine from the daily specials menu which is published on the blackboard in the lounge bar. There is usually a more exotic flavour to these offerings and they are only available on a first come first served basis, late diners note!!
The comfortable and spacious restaurant, which has been recently re-furbished can seat up to 80 covers but Di, the joint licencee, has it very well organised and delays here are unheard of.

Through the french doors of the restaurant, a large, decked seating area is available for those wishing to dine alfresco when the weather permits. Cafe style seating and heaters make this a popular place to enjoy a summer evenings drink.

Since their move to the Green Dragon some 2 years ago, Chris and Di have overseen the creation of 5 letting bedrooms. All have been tastefully designed with colour co-ordinated furnishings and equipped with full ensuite facilities. These are all now available and advanced booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
